Ecological Impact Assessment

Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA)

At Ecology Consulting, our ecology consultants deliver expert Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs) that form a vital part of responsible, sustainable development.

Whether you are planning a residential scheme, commercial build, infrastructure upgrade or land management project, our EcIAs provide the clarity and compliance you need to move forward with confidence.

What is an Ecological Impact Assessment?

An Ecological Impact Assessment is a detailed process used to identify, evaluate and mitigate the potential impacts a proposed development could have on habitats, species and the wider ecological network.

Our team of experienced ecology consultants works closely with developers, planners and local authorities to ensure projects comply with national and local planning policy, while also protecting biodiversity and ecological value.

Our Approach

We take a clear, robust and proportionate approach to every EcIA. Our methodology follows the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) guidelines, ensuring assessments are thorough, defensible and tailored to the scale of your proposal.

Key steps in our EcIA process include:

  • Scoping and Baseline Data Collection - We begin by identifying key ecological receptors that may be affected, using desktop research and detailed ecological surveys to establish a baseline understanding of the site.
  • Impact Assessment - Our ecology consultants assess both direct and indirect impacts, from habitat loss and fragmentation to disturbance, lighting and pollution,  throughout the construction and operational phases.
  • Avoidance, Mitigation and Compensation - We work proactively to identify opportunities to avoid or reduce impacts, and where necessary, implement compensatory measures to ensure no net loss of biodiversity.
  • Residual Effects and Enhancements - We evaluate the residual effects post-mitigation and recommend biodiversity enhancement opportunities that may add ecological value to your development.
  • Reporting and Support - You will receive a comprehensive, planning-ready EcIA report, and we’ll remain on hand to provide expert advice throughout the application process.

When is an EcIA Required?

Local planning authorities may require an EcIA for any development that could significantly affect designated sites, priority habitats or protected species. If your project involves greenfield land, watercourses, woodlands or hedgerows, early engagement with qualified ecology consultants is essential to avoid costly delays.

Our team regularly supports:

  • Housing and commercial developments
  • Renewable energy schemes
  • Infrastructure and transport projects
  • Quarrying and mineral extraction
  • Estate management and rural diversification
